The history of our company dates back to 1902 when it was launched as the Cheshire Public House Trust Company by Albert Henry George, fourth Earl Grey.
One of Earl Grey's interests was the service and hospitality offered by the average British inn, and he set out to improve these standards. He started his campaign by bringing together representatives from every county and put forward the idea that each should found a Public House Trust.
British Trust Hotels was one of the first to be set up, with shares being purchased by nine local businessmen. These men decided that half the shares should be owned by a charitable trust to ensure the original aims of the company were maintained. The dividend attributed to these shares is still distributed to charity today.
In 2005, the hotel company within North British Trust Group was re-branded as Crerar Hotels.
Crerar Hotels now boasts hotels in the most scenic parts of Scotland and northern England.
Our hotels are 'Hotels with Heart and Soul'. Everyone who works for us cares passionately about hospitality and ensuring all guests enjoy their visits. This was the case since inception over 100 years ago, and it is still the case today.
