Crerar Hotels Blog Page - My Choice of Cattle

In one of my last updates I told you that I was getting into farming. Well I have settled on Luing cattle over Aberdeen Angus on the basis that the Luing lives longer and likes to winter outside - which is good for a whole number of reasons but also means the meat takes longer to grow but at the same time the extra time growing means extra flavour.

I am now the proud owner of a nucleus herd of Luing cattle bought from Dingwall auction mart (an experience in itself) …and I have just taken delivery of a very large and quite daunting bull named Hercules - he weighs 1250kg but is still growing. I have to say that the theory is fine ….you clip a rope on to the ring on his nose and put a head harness on to lead him around but when you stand next to a block of muscle heavier than a car …..suddenly the theory is less simple! However Hercules is hardly a problem compared to Primrose, one of our Highland heifers (in the clip she is the one with the wonky horn) ….she saw the bull, he gave her a winning smile and overnight she jumped a full height electric fence to get more acquainted! What do I do about that? I felt strangely disappointed with this behaviour but slowly I am getting used to the idea that Primrose's first calf may be a "Huing" or a "Luingander" ….only time will tell!!!
