Crerar Hotels Blog Page - Glencoe Hotel

I went to Glencoe last Friday to see how the rebuilding was going - we are opening it back up (the Glencoe Hotel) in its smaller form as we still, after 4 years of trying, have no final conclusion from all of the departments involved in granting planning permission. We simply just have to reopen until we can be more confident of where we are on the permissions. I have to say though I am pretty excited about this - it's going to be very different from what we normally do and therefore our approach has had to be changed…I think for the better. We want to attract walkers, climbers, mountain bikers and all sorts of outdoors folk who use Glencoe as their back garden. But we also have our regular customers to think of so we have to get the blend right.

After leaving Glencoe I joined some pals at Kyleakin and sailed courtesy of the Ocean Youth Trust into Glen Nevis to spend an evening in Scotland's remotest pub, the Old Forge at Inverie - you can only get there by boat or by an 18 mile march over the craggy hills of Knoydart. It was everything I had hoped for and more….a packed bar with sailors, climbers, families on holiday and locals all getting into the spirit…after an improtu 25 a side game of football was abandoned due to midges, we feasted on the freshest mussels and prawns I have ever tasted (it probably helped seeing them being loaded from the boat) but the big ticket of the night was the amazing entertainment in the form of ordinary pub patrons armed with "house guitars", mouth organs, fiddles and so on…all of them would have reached the final of 'Britain's Got Talent!

If I were to suggest something to do before you die…it would be to spend an evening in the company of whoever was in at the Old Forge at Inverie - fantastic…if we can get 10% of the way there with Glencoe we will have cracked it!
