Paddy feeding his coooows during the big freeze.

The cows are coming on great and it has just dawned on me that I can measure the time to calving in days not weeks now….jings!! Quite worried about that but I have been promised plenty of help! Mind you, once they are born they really grow fast. They were born in March and really have come on fantastically. You can really see the quality of a couple in particular and I am sure they will be good bullying heifers come spring 2011.

On the quality note I have one heifer that is a "non breeder" she , I am sad to say, is for the butchers block - I thought I would be sadder about it but I have to say that I am really looking forward to seeing the fruits of toil in its final process…I find myself looking at her as a butcher might and if I could I would give her a wee bit more silage to keep her fat before the off! I have decided at the persuasion of Greg ( our group Executive chef) that she should be for the hotels at Easter which is great but trimming wise I would prefer to move things on sooner - will let you know when you can expect Greg to get his way!

Lastly on the Luings my pal Tam ( a paramedic who lives over the next field) got a video camera for Christmas and has been bothering me and my family with it ever since. However the clip below shows you the farm just in the middle of January and it shows me feeding the cows ( by the way if I look a little like an Eskimo with the mobility of a hippo it has a good deal to do with how many layers of clothes I am wearing…it was minus 9 when he decided to pop round!)

Watch Paddy feeding his prize coooooows!
