National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society

Crerar Hotels Trust has donated £4,750 to National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society to support the launch of a Rheumatoid Arthritis self-management programme in two new units in Scotland – Gartnavel General Hospital (NW Glasgow) and Wishaw General Hospital (N Lanarkshire).

The National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) is the only patient led organisation dedicated to supporting, educating, informing and providing advocacy for the estimated 690,000 people living with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and 12,000 children and young people living with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) in the UK, their families, carers and the healthcare professionals who care for them.

They support people living with the daily burden of RA by –

  • Providing information, education, support, advocacy
  • Raising public and govt. awareness
  • Campaigning
  • Facilitating networking and encouraging self-help

Their core services are:

  • Telephone helpline
  • Volunteer network
  • Interactive informative website
  • Newsletters, specialists publications and leaflets
  • Increasing awareness and membership
  • Research surveys

Some 1 in 100 of the adult population has this disabling, complex autoimmune disease, and 5,500 people with RA live in Scotland.

The support, education and advocacy that NRAS provides, will bring enhanced quality of life, less isolation, more participation in social activities and a longer working life for those with the disease.

Crerar Hotels Trust’s donation will help to launch a RA self-management programme – research shows that people with long-term, chronic conditions, gain better control over their lives when adopting a self-management approach to their disease. The six week courses comprises of weekly classroom sessions, discussions and peer interactions designed to improve participants’ knowledge, confidence and disease management.
