Ocean Youth Trust
Crerar Hotels Trust has donated £10,000 to Ocean Youth Trust to support funding towards delivering The Voyage Programme for disadvantaged beneficiaries.
Ocean Youth Trust Scotland’s purpose is to inspire young people through the challenge of adventure under sail – to realise their true potential in order to live healthy, fulfilling lives and make a positive contribution to their community.
Ocean Youth Trust Scotland’s year round 2016 programme includes the delivery of 60 youth sail training voyages and 17 sail training voyages for volunteers and sea staff with further maintenance weekends and sea trial voyages planned along with the annual refit of three sailing vessels.
They provide a powerful and very effective environment for the personal development of young people. Around 600 youngsters per annum aged 12 to 25 years from across Scotland and from diverse backgrounds and abilities now sail with Ocean Youth Trust. Around two thirds of these young people suffer from economic, social or physical disadvantage or they may find formal education difficult and have additional learning needs.
Crerar Hotels Trust’s donation will go towards the costs of delivering The Voyage Programme for disadvantaged beneficiaries from around The Crerar Hotels. Their sail training programme for young people from the communities around the Crerar Hotels will have two key strands. The first element will continue to build on their existing sail training projects with five groups of disadvantaged young people from the schools they are already working with. Each group of twelve young people supported by six OYTS sea-staff and fully trained volunteers will follow a Voyage Syllabus.
The second strand is the New Horizons project – an exciting new initiative to deliver a bold and adventurous programme of sail training with vulnerable young people aged 16 to 19 from across the Highlands and Argyll and Bute who have not fared well in life or education.
