Bag Books helps people with learning disabilities.
Book bags are multi-sensory stories – each page comprises an A3 board with a sensory item attached, all designed to engage the key sense of sight, sound, touch, smell and motion.
The support from Crerar Trust will support funding to visit 6 special schools in Scotland to receive a full day of multi-sensory storytelling, two multi-sensory books for ongoing use in the school and a copy of the interactive training manual.
Bag Books is a UK registered charity supporting people with learning disabilities through the provision of multi-sensory storytelling. Bag books is the only charity in the UK publishing multisensory books for people with severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities. Bag books are aimed at those who cannot benefit from mainstream books. They can be enjoyed without being understood as they are told interactively through a voice and emotion rather than words and pictures. They are designed for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (a maximum developmental age of 18 months), people with severe learning disabilities (a maximum developmental age of 6 years) or people with severe autistic spectrum disorders. They are also hugely beneficial to those with visual and /or hearing impairments.
Bag books has three key areas of focus:
- The design and production of a range of multi-sensory books for people with learning disabilities.
- Providing multi-sensory storytelling sessions. In 2014, 7,076people took part in one of our story telling sessions
- Training. In 2014, we trained 562 people – parents, carers and teachers – in multi-sensory storytelling technique.
