Discovery Camps helps disadvantaged children from the city of Dundee and the surrounding area to go on week long structured holiday camps.
The purpose of Discovery Camps Trust is to enable disadvantaged children that otherwise might not have a holiday attend a holiday camp run in a Christian atmosphere. Discovery Camps Trust does this by providing financial help of up to 100% in the greatest cases of need but usually around 75% of the total cost. By helping young people participate in a week long structured event it enables them to firstly, enjoy a holiday and secondly build lifelong skills such as relationship building and teamwork through being part of a structured, fun filled environment.
Children are also recruited through Dundee Social Work department. Social workers and others doing voluntary work in Dundee’s most deprived areas will guide Discovery Camps as to the most relevant young people who would benefit from such a holiday. Children aged nine to sixteen who come from a home where circumstances suggest that without help the young people would otherwise have no holiday are offered places.
The support of Crerar Trust will put the charity in a position to help wholly or partly finance youngsters to attend Teen Ranch Scotland or Tannadice Scout Centre near Forfar for a week camp at Easter and to various Summer Camps including 2 or 3 week camps held at Tannadice Scout Centre and a week at Teen Ranch Scotland in July which is only attended by young people funded by Discovery Camps.
