Fishing in Oban

Often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’, Oban makes an excellent base for exploring many of Scotland’s beautiful Western islands including Mull, Coll, Tiree, Islay, Colonsay, South Uist and Barra. The area is renowned for its high quality seafood, with many restaurants and hotels serving up fresh and flavoursome ‘catches of the day’. However, if you are determined to catch your own dinner, Oban is a great location for the fishing enthusiast, with its nearby waters brimming with pollack, wrasse, cod, conger eel, dogfish, tope, thornback rays, cod, ling and gurnard. For further variety you may want to take a trip to Mull where you’ll be in with a chance of catching angler fish, spurdog, and, most notably, skate.

Sea anglers can fish for free at any of the area’s surrounding sea lochs as well as various shoreline locations near Oban Caravan and Camping Park just south of Oban Bay.

Oban and Lorn Angling Club also manage several good trout lochs and will let you buy a permit to try your chances at catching wild brownies in moorland lochs such as Loch Nell, Loch Lonan and Loch Sonachan. For those looking specifically for rainbow trout, sea trout or pike, Loch Awe is the place to catch them.

Permits are £6 per day, £12 for three days or £30 for a week and are available from many of Oban’s fishing tackle shops. Specific permits for Loch Oude can be purchased from Kilmelford Village Shop and for Loch Scammadale, you can find them at Scammadale Farm. For a truly relaxing trip, three man boats can be hired for a week at these lochs allowing you to take to take to the open water and enjoy the tranquillity of Argyll’s countryside.
