Wildlife Watching near Oban Bay Hotel & Spa
Scotland’s west coast provides more wildlife watching opportunities than anywhere else in the UK and Oban is a great place from which to access it.
In the summer months the pristine waters around Oban are rich with marine life including porpoises, dolphins and minke whales. Anytime between late May and the end of June is a good time for minke whale sightings. If you keep your eyes peeled you may even see a basking shark – which can be up to 8 metres in length.
Along the rocky shoreline there’re plenty of opportunities for spotting grey and common seals – and, if you’re really lucky, you may even spot an otter. There are numerous seabirds too including guillemots, gannets and razorbills. If you’re keen to add a puffin to your list then a boat trip to the island of Staffa is recommended. To be in with a chance of experiencing the spectacular sight of a white tailed sea eagle aim for Mull, which has managed a highly successful reintroduction programme over the last 30 years.
