Fishing in Grantown-on-Spey, Aviemore
The astounding River Spey is the second most productive salmon river in the whole of Britain, as well as being the best sea-trout river in Scotland and one of the top three fish laden rivers in the United Kingdom, making Grantown-on-Spey fishing one of the most popular activities in the area. The total catchment area of the river is 3008km2 and the area provides fishers and visitors alike stunning views of the Cairngorm Mountains, as well as the opportunity to have a heart thumping chance at catching a fish or two.
From the source at Loch Spey, there are many opportunities to catch starting at Dulnain Mouth, down to Tarric Mor which tumbles into Clach na Strone down to big stream before heading under Grantown on Spey Bridge and passing through the Lurg (long pool) and finally reaching Slop Thomas. Each area has its advantages and all present a fantastic location to do a spot of fishing and take in the nature and wildlife.
Species that you can expect to catch include the Atlantic salmon, trout (migratory), brown trout, European eel, Arctic char, pike, minnow three spined stickleback and finally the flounder.
The River Spey season runs from March until September. At Loch Spey where the river descends to the mouth of Spey Bay, is where there is the most amount of fishing happens. This is, along the Strathspey from Grantown-on-Spey where The Craiglynne Hotel is located near to Spey Bay.
Due to the descent of the water, this makes fly fishing perfect to catch something every time you go out on the water. It can prove to be a very thrilling day out!
