Top Attractions in Glencoe, West Highlands
Glencoe’s main attraction is its scenery...it’s a Scottish Hollywood! For almost 70 years film makers have flocked here to try and incorporate the scenery’s jaw-dropping grandeur into their movies. Globally famous movies filmed in and around the area include The 39 Steps, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Braveheart, Rob Roy, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Skyfall...you get the idea.
There’s a choice of water sports available on the lochs and miles of rugged mountain biking terrain (with bike hire in the village) plus winter sports include skiing, snowboarding and rock and ice climbing. In fact we’re home to the world’s largest indoor ice wall, at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven, AND the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis (in Gaelic Beinn Nibheis) in Fort William, so it’s hardly surprising Glencoe attracts active types - but don’t let that put you off if you just want to relax and take in the views. You can do that too...all day if you like.
For a more laid back approach, spend the day fishing (there’s superb salmon fishing in the Rivers Coe and Orchy) or make some new friends and join the bird watchers, botanists and wildlife enthusiasts who all flock to Glencoe for its literally breathtaking landscape.
If you have kids be sure to pop into the award-winning Glencoe Visitor Centre (1½ miles south), with its interactive fun stuff to do for kids and adults. There’s a shop and café too selling irresistible homemade cakes...
