Oban Pipe Band Beats the Competition

Oban Pipe Band members celebrated a trophy win at the weekend’s (June 29th) European Pipe Band Championships in Forres after taking out fourth place in Grade 2 with their brand new drums.

The band was able to purchase the new drums after recently receiving a £3,450 donation from Crerar Trust, which benefits from a 50 per cent share of Crerar Hotel’s distributable profits to non-for-profit organisations, charities, schools and local sporting teams.

Crerar Trust Chairman Paddy Crerar, said the trust aims to support charities in the areas around Crerar Hotel locations.

“Helping the Oban Pipe Band was a really easy decision, particularly as had we said no my mother would have belted me! She is a big fan of the pipe band,” Paddy said.

“It’s also important for us to thank the community that supports our hotels so well – our Oban Bay hotel benefits greatly from a loyal local patronage, which we never forget. Helping groups like the Pipe Band, the Phoenix Cinema and the Marie Curie cancer unit in Oban are all part of how we say thank you.”

“I should also say that we were able to help the Isle of Mull Pipe Band with a similar donation (as we have the Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa).“

Pipe Band Fundraising Coordinator, Alister Dewar, said many of the old drums were in desperate need of replacement and was “extremely grateful to Crerar Hotels for this generous donation”.

“The fantastic sum of money has enabled the band to purchase high quality drums, which should last the band for many years to come. With the drums now bought, fundraising continues and can now be concentrated on the general running of the band,” Mr Dewar said.
