Crerar Hotels Trust bookmarks another donation with £10,000 for Scottish Book Trust.

Crerar Trust has thrown its support behind Scottish Book Trust. A £10,000 donation was made to the charity which will fund their Shared Reading Programme, devised to encourage more reluctant readers in local authority schools.

Scottish Book Trust promotes literature in Scotland, developing innovative projects to encourage adults and children to read, write and to be inspired by books. Children who have benefited from the scheme got together last week (Friday June 24), and were invited along to Oban Bay Hotel to receive the special cheque.

The Shared Reading Programme has already significantly helped less able readers gain confidence, increase self-esteem and improve skills, plus encourage the development of strong friendships between older and younger children. The support of the Crerar Trust will help plan for the programme’s growth and secure its future.

The donation follows previous funding to the Scottish Book Trust amounting to £62,625 since 2009. Chairman of the Crerar Hotels Trust, Paddy Crerar, said enabling people of all backgrounds, ages and abilities to see and fulfil their potential is a key priority for the Trust.

“Reading is key to a child’s learning and development and also enables them to grow confidence. Above all we want to see these children having fun and the huge smiles we’ve seen on their faces shows our donation is very worthwhile.’ Paddy said.

Jasmine Fassl, Head of the Schools Programme at Scottish Book Trust, said:

“We are hugely grateful to Crerar Trust for their generous donation. Shared reading schemes have immeasurable benefits for the pupils, teachers and the school itself, including improved reading attainment, increased confidence, improved interpersonal skills and even a more cohesive school community. Most importantly, the pupils who are involved in the schemes often develop an increased enjoyment of reading.”
