Pitlochry Distilleries

Perth and Kinross were once abundant with both legal and illegal whisky distilleries. Trails of smoke would rise in the air from multiple steep pagoda rooves, and coopers would set to work creating wooden barrels. Today in Pitlochry, only two distilleries remain: Bell's Blair Athol and Edradour. Both have a rich history and produce a selection of blended and single malt whiskies.

These distilleries are a window into a fascinating history, and they tell this tale through their products, through deep and complex flavours reflected in a spectrum of colours, but most of all the story is told through the love and labour put into the whisky. Guided tours are available at both locations, as are tasting sessions – all guided by enthusiastic professionals. Pick yourself up a bottle of history at both distilleries, with concessions granted upon the purchase of a guided tour ticket.

Blair Athol Distillery

Blair Athol Distillery draws its water from the pure waters of the Allt Dour. The flagship 12 Year Old Single Malt is often described as an ‘easy to drink’ dram, the flavour profile fruity with a smooth finish and a deep-toned aroma. This complex and yet beautifully simple whisky is one of the components of Britain's favourite blended whisky, Bell's.

Learn how malted barley, water and yeast is distilled in traditional copper pots, before being matured in oak casks and transforming into the well-known beverage that is enjoyed today.

Edradour Distillery

The charming Edradour distillery can trace its roots all the way back to 1825. As the smallest traditional distillery in Scotland, the unique place prides itself on being the last remaining creator of handmade single malt whisky from a farm distillery. Committed to producing whisky on an authentic small scale, it's impressive that this distillery still boasts over 25 different varieties of single malt whisky.

Watch whisky being made first hand, smell the malted barley and hear the machines working away, as the knowledgeable staff explain how the magic happens. You can also grab yourself a bottle or two in the gift shop before you leave.
