I Visited All 10 Crerar Hotels in 2025: Here Are My Top 10 Tips
It's been just over 2 years since I have started my grand adventure with Crerar Hotels, and this past year I was able to visit all 10 of the stunning properties. I've been lucky be have the opportunity to travel across the UK and stay in some of the countries most breath taking areas in 2025, and hopefully I can continue to explore this year of 2026.
Every traveller is different. Different priorities, different preferences, but I think I have this down to a science. What better excuse to share my personal 10 top tips for making the most out of a Crerar Hotels experience?
Key Insights:
-
Crerar Hotels are built around experiences, not just stays – each Crerar Hotels property is a gateway to something memorable, including adventure activities, historic sites, spa retreats, food journeys, or even ghost stories, rather than just a place to sleep.
-
Balance adventure with restoration – A recurring theme is contrast: high-energy outdoor exploration (hiking, watersports, off-roading) paired with indulgent recovery (spas, thermal experiences, massages, suites). Crerar Hotels excels at catering to both ends of that spectrum
-
Sense of place and storytelling elevate each location – History, landscape, and local character are central—castles, jails, scenic lochs, coastal views, and folklore all help each Crerar Hotel property feel distinct, rooted, and emotionally engaging rather than generic.
-
Indulgence is encouraged and normalized – From upgrading to suites, lingering over dessert, using the spa “as much as you can,” and leaving free time in the itinerary, these hotels promote slowing down and treating yourself as an essential part of the Crerar Hotels experience.
1. Bring the dog. They deserve holidays too!
All 10 of accommodations across the Crerar Hotels collection are dog friendly, and at some, I would be inclined to say dog encouraged. Loch Fyne Hotel & Spa and Oban Bay Hotel are two that spring to mind immediately – with doggie breakfasts, welcome photo opportunities and designated places for owners to dine.
The Glencoe Inn is also a great place to escape with your four legged friend, especially for all the adventurous and active pups out there. There are so many outdoor walks and hikes to reconnect with the great outdoors, something forever level of outdoorsmen confidence. It’s so popular with travellers and explorers alike, Crerar Hotels has even put together a list of their favourite dog walks in the area.
2. Step outside your comfort zone
There’s so much to do while exploring the UK. Steeped in history, expansive vistas, and towering mountains, there are plenty of natural and historical sites to see, but think about trying something different.
For the out of the box explorer, Dunkeld House Hotel hosts the perfect location for adrenaline junkies and novice explorers alike. Dunkeld Adventures is the home to several Perthshire based activities. Go off-roading with the Land Rover Experience or test your skills in the white waters of Rivers Tay and Tummel with Nae Limits. The traveling marksmen might be excited to hear the largest shooting centre in Scotland, County Clays, sits directly on the 280-acre grounds of Dunkeld House Hotel.
3. Spend as much time in the fresh air as possible
The Crerar Hotels are spread around some of the most beautiful, scenic areas in Scotland and the Lake District. Outdoor sports such as hiking and cycling drive many people to the great outdoors of the UK, but there are also tamer options for those looking to relax.
Situated on Lake Grasmere, Daffodil Hotel & Spa offers a refuge for those traveling far and wide to conquer the rolling hills surrounding the English village, on foot and on two wheels. While there truly are few better expanses of Fells, coming back to relax on the scenic terrace, cold drink in hand might be my favourite part of the hike. Whether you are an adventurer or simply need an escape, take some time to get outside, and enjoy the fresh air.
4. Use the spa facilities as much as you can
Even if it's just to sit and relax in the calming atmosphere, many of the Crerar Hotels have award winning spas, renowned for their experiences and facilities.
Out of all the spas, it would be remiss to not call your attention to the Coast Spa at Golf View Hotel & Spa in Nairn. Wall to wall windows look out across the green gardens and onto the water of Moray Firth, insulating the pool, thermal experience rooms and indoor hot tub in its own greenhouse. With stunning views paired with crystal blue waters, you’re more likely to feel as if you're holidaying in Italy or the south of France as opposed to a mere 30-minutes from Inverness.
5. History can be just as beautiful as the scenery
Ancient architecture situated in the rolling hills and seaside cliffs offer some amazing views, but what's the story behind these old world locations? From the south of England to the far north of Scottish Highlands, walking in the footsteps of those who came before us doesn't mean you have to walk aimlessly through traditional museums.
In the remote Scottish town of Inveraray, there is much history to explore. While in the summer the Duke and Duchess invite guests to visit the fairy tale Inveraray Castle, year round you can spend the day locked up in the Inveraray Jail – yes, for real. A one-of-a-kind experience, take a tour of the Inveraray Jail or break free in their new escape room. With real stories of previous inmates, interactive exhibits, and knowledgeable staff, dressed to the times, you are sure to have a truly unique visit.
6. Follow up your exploration with a massage.
Whether you were in the car for 20 minutes, an hour on a ferry, or on a plane for 9 hours, the stresses of travel can take a toll on the body. Pair that with the exploration of local hikes, spending hours on your feet wandering nearby monuments and museums, or indulging in local lagers, your holiday can only improve with a relaxing spa experience.
While many Crerear Hotels host state of the art spas with 10 meter pools, you could find just as beneficial of a treatment or relaxation at a smaller spa location like Oban Bay Hotel Spa. While there are offers of massages, facials, and other body treatments, I found the thermal experience at Oban Bay to be a must-do experience on the west coast.
7. Upgrade to a suite at least once
Much like the lure of flying first class, booking a suite is something I think everyone needs to indulge in at least once in their life. Also much like first class, you need to be selective when you do. Not all suites are built equally, and some might only be slightly larger, or pull out couches. While that’s certainly not the case at the Crerar Hotels, I do have a favourite.
The Retreat Suites at the Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa are the pinnacle of luxury for seekers of relaxation after a day of adventure. With a private terrace, personal use hot tub overlooking coastal views, large ensuite, inviting seating area, plus complimentary access to the Thermal Experience, I’ve truly felt more at peace than here. Order a bottle of wine to the room, and you have your own personal escape to completely unwind in.
8. Leave some free time in your packed itinerary
Exploring the country and learning the history is important, but it's also important to remember you’re on holiday. You probably want to fit as much into your trip as possible, but try to leave some time in your itinerary to relax.
In the quaint village of Ballater, it’s hard to not want to spend some time cosying in at the Balmoral Arms. With plush arm chairs and worn wood floors, snuggle up next to the roaring fire to crack open a book with a cup of tea, or something stronger if you're winding down after dinner. Perfect for a late start to the morning or an early night in, maybe grab a journal to record the adventure from your day before, seeing Balmoral Castle, or hiking into the Cairngorms to see the elusive Balmoral Pyramid.
9. Don’t skip the starter, and NEVER skip dessert
Even if you’re just passing through, I urge you to indulge in simple pleasures when staying at the Crerar Hotels. Many are hosts to award winning kitchens, from elevated pub grub to fine dining experiences.
At Fonab Castle, 1892 on the Loch offers a relaxed brasserie experience with stunning views across the loch and an atmosphere that feels both elegant and inviting. Using fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, the menu is full of flavour and character, with Head Chef Paul Tyrell bringing a thoughtful touch to every plate — turning each dish into a story told through taste and presentation.
10. If it feels haunted, it probably is
Now for some people a bump in the night isn't a problem, and what I've found is there are plenty of spooky-centric people actually looking for that type of stay, especially in Scotland! With long and full histories, dating back thousands of years, it is no wonder people come here searching for tales of local spirits and paranormal excellence.
If there is one location among this collection that is familiar with ghostly sightings, it would be Thainstone House Hotel. It is said that the Green Lady, an apparition of a young girl who years ago passed away at the grand country house after a riding accident, appears still to this day to guests. In fact, you can stay in the very room where she died, but if you’ve brought a pet, it’s unlikely you will make it past the threshold, as animals seem to avoid room number 406.
